Ware Malcomb ANNOUNCES COMPLETION OF NEW BOB HOPE USO CENTER AT JOHN WAYNE AIRPORT
Pro Bono Project to Provide Respite for Active Duty Military Personnel in Transit
Irvine, California (December 15, 2014) – Ware Malcomb, an award-winning international design firm, today announced that construction is complete on the new Bob Hope USO Center at John Wayne Airport, which will be used by active duty United States military personnel traveling through Orange County. United Service Organizations Inc. (USO) is a nonprofit organization that provides programs, services and live entertainment to U.S. troops and their families.
Ware Malcomb provided pro bono design services and construction documents for the project. All contractors and subcontractors, including General Contractor Snyder Langston, also provided services for the project free of charge.
The Bob Hope USO Center at John Wayne Airport is designed to bring creature comforts, food and a friendly atmosphere to the approximately 50,000 active duty military personnel and their families who travel through Orange County each year on their way to various duty assignments. The new center consists of a canteen and lounge area complete with couches, televisions, computers with internet access, books and board games. The space is located in Terminal B of John Wayne Airport.
Ware Malcomb worked closely on the layout and design of the USO Center with John Wayne Airport’s architect and facilities personnel. “Our goal was to design a comfortable space where members of the military could grab a quick bite to eat, relax, catch up on social media, or just rest while waiting for their flight,” said Lawrence R. Armstrong, Chief Executive Officer of Ware Malcomb.
“When we approached Ware Malcomb to help us with architectural and design options for the new center, they jumped at the chance to support our troops and military families,” said Bob Kurkjian, Executive Director of Bob Hope USO and a Navy Reservist who has served three deployments in the Middle East. “We couldn’t be happier with the entire Ware Malcomb team and all the amazing philanthropic partners who made this possible.”
“This project is the result of an extraordinary collaboration of Orange County-based companies, all coming together to donate their time and services for the benefit of our troops,” continued Armstrong. “We were all humbled by the opportunity to work on this project in honor of their incredible service to our country.”
