UMI’s Cool New Creative Office
By Rhea Butler

Ware Malcomb provided interior architecture and design services for the renovation of an existing 15,000 square foot space to create a new office and warehouse for United Mechanical Incorporated. This new location in Alameda, California will be UMI’s sixth office in the San Francisco Bay Area. UMI provides engineering and construction services in the areas of HVAC and plumbing to the commercial industry throughout Northern California.
For their new office, UMI wanted a “cool and hip” environment that would appeal to their younger staff. The result was a vibrant space achieved through the use of bold accent colors throughout the workplace.
The glass conference room, open office areas and huddle spaces foster creativity within the space. In addition, new open break rooms and a fun, gaming area contribute to the energetic and collaborative atmosphere.
A unique aspect of this project is that UMI was able to act as their own general contractor, utilizing their knowledge and experience with HVAC and plumbing systems. The project also incorporated sustainable design elements, including all new LED lights and metered outlets throughout the building to meet CALGreen building code standards.
