Building a Community

Ware Malcomb took part of the 10th annual Baja Challenge (www.bajachallenge.org) event on Saturday, October 3rd. 2009, marking the firm’s 10th year of participation. The Ware Malcomb volunteer team was made up of Ware Malcomb San Diego office employees, D.A. Whitacre Construction Inc. Framers of El Cajon, California, and Taller de Arquitectura employees of Mexicali, Baja California.

With a goal to build 15 homes in one day for less fortunate families in Eastern Tijuana, Mexico, the day started by hitting the rise and shine button at 4:30 am, loading up the vans, and hitting the road to Mexico.  The team had the house up and ready to paint in less than 3 hours, and after some priming issues and yellow paint the house was up and ready to go. Once the house was completed, the family was excited and very gracious about their new home.  The team had a great time, and found a community filled with hard working and generous people.

Ware Malcomb Principal, Matt Brady has volunteered in Baja Challenge since its inception in 1999.  He shares,

“At the end of each event, it’s great to see the excitement and energy the team has even after a hard day of work. This year in particular, it was amazing to feel the passion, gratitude, and spirit of the families working along side the groups to bring their new homes to life.”

The Baja Challenge is coordinated by volunteers of the San Diego Real Estate/Building Community and related industries, along with the non-profit organization Project Mercy (www.projectmercy.net). To find out more about the event or to get involved, visit www.bajachallenge.com.
