I Run for Hope

I run for hope
I run to feel
I run for the truth and
for all that is real
I run for your mother, your sister, your wife
I run for you and me my friend, I run for life

Those are some of the lyrics from Melissa Ethridge’s song, I Run for Life.

As a runner and a breast cancer survivor, the song resonates with me so much.

When I received the news I had breast cancer on November 25, 2011, fear and anxiety took over.
My whole world changed with one phone call.
I would be changed forever.

Breast Cancer is an epidemic in the United States. 1 in 8 women will get it in their lifetime.

Don’t think that because you are healthy and have no family history, you have no risk. Family history makes up a small percentage of cases. The biggest risks are being female and getting older.

The battle for a cure isn’t over. Organizations like Komen OC www.komenoc.org need funding to continue to help under privileged women in our community get screening and care, as well funding research grants.

Komen OC saves lives.

Research makes a difference.

A good family friend of ours was diagnosed with breast cancer 20 years ago. At that time, it was standard protocol to have all breast cancer patients go through chemotherapy and have all lymph nodes removed. As a result, this friend developed lymphedema.

Fast forward to 2012. My 3 tumors went through customized testing. Oncotype DX. It was determined in my case, that the risks of chemotherapy outweighed the benefits. I had 7 (not all) lymph nodes removed and through my surgeon Dr. Lisa Curcio, learned how to utilize manual lymph node drainage to reduce my risk of lymphedema.
